The parallels between 1919 and 2019 are remarkable, and eerie. Wow, a very interesting view into the rise of automobile culture as seen from four who helped make it so: Ford, Edison, Firestone and Burroughs as road trip partners through the 1910s and 1920s. Their annual trips were paid for by Ford, arranged by Firestone, and always accommodated whatever Edison wanted. I’ll add this book to the “interesting history most haven’t heard about” category. I thought the book would be more about this kind of thing, but it ended up being much more about their lives than I thought, which was still indeed interesting enough, if long winded. That was all very interesting. The Vagabonds details a ten year period between 1914-1924 where Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and John Burroughs took summer road trips across the United States. It was interesting to read about the places they visited, such as the Everglades and many other areas across the United States in a much, much different world than today. Rather than satisfying my interest in the men or their misadventures, it makes me look forward more eagerly to Edmund Morris’s posthumous biography of the inventor due out in October. For all the free publicity the vagabonds garnered, the friendship between Edison and Ford was genuine. He was also a grumpy old cuss. 4.5 stars. Between his harrumphing and Edison’s fitful desire to “rough it,” problems of one sort or another bedeviled almost every trip.
