There’s always a temptation to overcomplicate the reasons why a story-focused video game does or doesn’t work, but it’s really very simple. Fables Wiki is a FANDOM Comics Community. Now, as the sheriff of Fabletown—New York City’s magically concealed neighborhood of mythical, legendary and fairy tale figures—he is the law, and keeping the streets safe for Fables and Mundanes alike is his beat. Although for most fables the more immediate problem is being able to afford a Glamour spell in the first place, with many of the characters being destitute. The dialogue is fine, with plenty of good lines that really help characterize everyone who shows up. In the video game, the colors were bright and vibrant with lots of purples, greens, blues, and other lovely mixes. Both are based on comic books though, in this case a Vertigo series called Fables (we assume they didn’t use the name in the title because of Microsoft’s Fable series). The first chapter of this series covers most of the opening to the first episode of the game. Very little real gameplay or puzzles. Luckily for me, this prequel volume revolves around my very favorite Fables character, Bigby Wolf. The characters are primarily drawn from European fairytales, with the main character of the game being the Big Bad Wolf – although everyone refers to him as Bigby and he’s now the sheriff of ‘Fabletown’. It’s rather drab and bland, nothing really all that colorful to it. It is developed by Telltale Games.It is canon with the comic book universe and is set as a prequel to the comic book. They form a small community in New York, with the more humanoid fables living in a neighbourhood protected by magic spells and the more bizarre ones living out of town in somewhere called The Farm – which isn’t featured in this episode. Is it good? Like all Telltale Games this is only the first downloadable episode of five, with the others due to be released at roughly two month intervals (as usual the PSN version is delayed in Europe, but hopefully should be available this month). So the story does have a set path in comparison, which is understandable (though fans upset that this might canonize one specific storyline/direction with the story could be a tad disappointed, especially if the story ends up not being like what they choose). Most of the dialogue is lifted directly from the video game, with some exceptions and changes. The line work is perfectly fine and does a decent job of depicting everyone, the action, and locations with some minor issues. So, when I heard about a digital comic based on the game coming out, I was excited. Each episode is roughly three hours long and despite Fables’ unusual premise The Wolf Among Us’ first episode manages to get into the action almost instantly. A character with an "Unknown" status was alive when last seen, but was injured, lost, or unsecured since. So nothing really major on that front. Maybe wait a bit until a few more chapters are out, but otherwise, I don’t see getting this right unless you are a diehard fan of the video game. The spells protecting Fabletown only discourage ordinary humans (referred to as ‘mundies’), rather than actively keeping them away, and so the fear of discovery is ever present. Unlike The Walking Dead you haven’t the life of a small child to worry about here, but that didn’t stop us being genuinely upset at the victims of what seem to be a fable serial killer. Although we were vaguely aware of it before playing the game we’ve never read an issue, although it’s a tribute to the game that as soon as we finished this first episode we were already thinking of picking up a trade paperback. Overall, if you want more of The Wolf Among Us, this might be for you since it’s not quite an exact point-by-point retelling of the comic, but it’s hard to recommend since it’s not particularly adding anything new either.
