Do we type faster with a physical keyboard over a touchscreen one? There’s no doubt that it’s a little late to the Australian market, and that’s hard, but likewise, it’s hard to make a compelling case for a phone this late that still carries a price this high. There is no support for wireless charging, but we’re not really missing it because battery life is stellar. The Key2 doesn’t also have the best HDR, so some parts of high-contrast photos may sometimes look under or overexposed. We can’t think of a better word to describe it. That being said, Netflix and YouTube look perfectly adequate on the screen and satisfied our binge-watching habits. We’ve talked about transitioning from an iPhone X touchscreen keyboard to the BlackBerry KeyOne keyboard — a fun experiment, but our typing speed became a lot slower. It’s not a slow processor, but it’s not exactly high-end, though Alcatel hair paired it with 6GB RAM which helps it along. The speaker doesn’t get very loud, and music and videos just sound average. The back isn’t lea… To be clear, it’s TCL Communications that makes the devices now and licenses the BlackBerry Mobile brand name, though BlackBerry Limited in Canada still handles the software and security updates. We definitely think the price could do with some work, but it’s not the only issue. But the biggest change to the Key2’s keyboard is the addition of a new key. This method of accessing apps is so much faster than hunting down in your app drawer or home screen, or even searching for an app. We have found ourselves to be a little more accurate on the Key2, though, and the decrease in speed doesn’t stop us from enjoying this keyboard. At least the camera was acceptable, though could be improved. And of course, there’s the keyboard For buttons, but there are also three buttons along the edge, with a volume rocker, power button, and a “Convenience Key” to map other functions to. That’s not to mention the fact that the backlit keyboard is still capacitive, meaning you can flick upwards under the predictive word bar to use suggested words quickly for even faster typing. Locker also now has the privacy-focused Firefox Focus browser pre-installed, which deletes browsing history as soon as you leave the app. But I wanted to. The BlackBerry Key2 improves on the KeyOne across the board. You see having a built-in keyboard is a nice concept, and back in the early days of smartphones, it made sense. You won’t see facial unlock security on the BlackBerry Key2, either. The Key2 is an acceptable phone at a price that isn’t quite as equal to that summary. Stellar battery life. There’s a communication hub which tries to bring messaging, your calendar, and social to the one place, but it just comes off feeling unnecessary, like yet another way to see notifications when just the apps on Android can do that for you. This year, you can easily get a better phone for the price and less, and there are plenty of choices. Blacks don’t look as rich as we’ve seen on OLED screens, but we don’t have many qualms about the screen here. We only noticed dips in performance when we were juggling several tasks at the same time, but even then our experience wasn’t really hampered. It isn't as fancy as glass, but it doesn't accrue fingerprints and I never once worried I'd drop it. They lack any solid traction and feel strange to press not just because you have to hold the Key2 like an awkwardly sized GameBoy, but also because they’re crammed next to each other like a claustrophobic keypad. They're 20 percent taller, easier to grip, and better separated than before. The power button is textured, so you’ll know which one you’re about to press, and they’re all easy to access. For the $1190 price tag, you don’t get water resistance, nor do you get wireless charging. There’s a Car profile, a Meeting profile, and a Home profile. There are two color options: silver and black. The Convenience Key — the physical button below the power button — now has three modes. If you’ve come from the BlackBerry-era, chances are you remember a BlackBerry fondly.
